Shanghai, May 16, 2014 — Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, will showcase its leading solutions dedicated to the battery market at the 11th China International Battery Fair (CIBF), which will be held in Shenzhen, China from June 18 to 20, 2014.
While electric vehicles have been the focus of the automotive industry lately, the stringent operation requirements for mobility power source have often presented bottle-necks, if not obstacles, in the popularity of hybrid and electric vehicles. Meanwhile, conscious efforts are being made to use renewable sources for energy generation, driving the need further for efficient energy storage solutions through rechargeable battery.
With decade-long experience in battery materials building leveraged from the former Phostech Lithium in Canada and former Sued-Chemie in Germany, Clariant’s Energy Storage Business Line emerged on the scene as an experienced mobile battery solution provider. Clariant produces two of the primary materials used for batteries – the cathode and the anode – that provide superior electrochemical performance and enhanced safety and affordability. It is the combination of these critical properties that best meets the clean energy and mobility needs of today.

Life Power® P2
Life Power® P2 is going to be the featured product during CIBF. It is ideally suited for lithium batteries used in SLI batteries, HEV, PHEV, EV, power tools, large storage batteries and defense applications which require extremely high power. The product has already been widely deployed in lithium iron phosphate battery production.
Life Power® P2 is remarkable mainly for its superior material safety: unlike the conventional, nickel and cobalt based cathode materials, lithium iron phosphate does not set free oxygen. Therefore, it does not contribute to risks of fire or explosion, explaining why it is particular suitable for energy storage purpose in hybrid or electric vehicles. Lithium iron phosphate is found as a natural mineral both in the charged (heterosite) and the discharged state (triphylite) and is thus very stable.
Another advantage of Life Power® P2 is its long life. The estimated lifetime of a typical battery made with this material is about 4,000 charging cycles or 10 years. Even after these 4,000 charging and discharging cycles, it typically still achieves 80 percent of its initial capacity. A battery with Life Power® P2 can be charged quickly. With a storage capacity of up to 160 watt hours per kilogram, the material could be used for high energy applications.
